The basement is a unique space, and a demanding environment to finish. Unlike the rest of your house, the basement sits below ground level and is surrounded by soil that remains cold and wet. When traditionally finishing a basement, this can pose many problems. However, by applying some basic “building science” to the design process, a basement can be safely finished. That’s why choosing the right finishing materials for your basement is a crucial step towards creating a safe and healthy living environment for years to come.
SMARTWALL is a high performance, pre-fabricated wall panel designed specifically for basement finishing. Taking everything we know about building science, SMARTWALL has been developed to withstand the unique “ecosystem” of the basement environment and is used anywhere concrete walls are present. Partition walls can be constructed the traditional way, since these walls are not directly affected by the foundation.
Why should SMARTWALL be used in front of concrete? The answer is simple. Concrete is a porous material and moisture can pass through it. SMARTWALL has been designed specifically to deal with these elements.
SMARTWALL is a panelized system. Each panel is 21.75” wide and comes in standard 8’ or 10’ lengths. Panels can be cut to fit any desired ceiling height or basement layout. When finished, SMARTWALL will look like every other wall in your home, and can be painted to suit your taste.

VAPOUR SHIELD TECHNOLOGY™ (VST)
Water vapour is water in its gaseous state-instead of liquid or solid (ice). Water vapour is totally invisible. In a home, water vapour is harmless, it is when it condenses and forms water that it can become a problem.
In order to prevent excessive water build up within your walls, SMARTWALL has Vapour Shield Technology (VST) built into every panel. By using expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, each SMARTWALL panel is factory bonded together to virtually eliminate all air pockets. By eliminating air pockets (which is where water vapour tends to condense), it allows the vapour to remain in its gaseous state, therefore reducing the possibility of water from forming within the wall cavity. This greatly reduces the chance for mold, mildew and rot.

GRAPHITE-INFUSED EPS INSULATION
Did you know that heat loss through uninsulated basement foundations can account for up to one third of the heat loss from an average home?
SMARTWALL includes rigid expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam insulation that has been infused with graphite. Graphite reflects and absorbs radiant energy, helping to further increase its R-Value as temperatures drop.
Responsive graphite infused EPS insulation means that unlike traditionally built walls, SMARTWALL actually powers up when it gets cold to give you the ultimate in comfort. The continuous, high quality EPS insulation forms a protective barrier around your basement.
Traditionally framed wood walls lose up to 30% of their insulating capabilities due to an effect called “Thermal Bridging”. Thermal bridging occurs when a conductive material (e.g. aluminum, steel, concrete, wood etc.) provides a path for heat to flow around insulation. The bypassing “bridging” of the less conductive material significantly reduces its effectiveness as an insulator. This is why many traditionally built walls have cold spots.
SMARTWALL virtually eliminates this “thermal bridge” by effectively encapsulating the framing in each panel within the rigid EPS insulation. This makes SMARTWALL one of the most energy efficient products that you can use to finish your basement.
The “effective” R-Value of SMARTWALL is R17. To obtain the same “effective” R-Value from a traditionally built wall using 2x6’s, a R24 batt insulation would need to be installed – that’s a 29% loss in efficiency. The encapsulated framing also features a tongue and groove design which allow the panels to join together to form a complete wall.
Hanging heavy objects on SMARTWALL is not a problem. In fact, objects as heavy as 165 lbs. can be safely hung on SMARTWALL, providing you screw directly into the framing members and appropriate fasteners are used. Therefore, SMARTWALL is more than strong enough to handle an 85” flat screen TV. (Approximate weight of 125 lbs.)
MOISTURE & MOLD RESISTANT GYPSUM BOARD
The National Building Code of Canada states, that polystyrene foam must be protected by a thermal barrier that provides a minimum 15 minute burn rating. SMARTWALL meets the building code requirements with its ½” layer of moisture and mold resistant gypsum board that protects the foam insulation.
It is important to note that Magnesium Oxide (MGO) board, does not act as a thermal barrier, and actually is a conductor of heat. Any product on the market that incorporates MGO and foam insulation is not safe to be used in a residential setting, and does not pass building code requirements.
EASY WIRE CHANNEL™ DESIGN
The SMARTWALL system has unique Easy Wire Channels built into every panel that allow for the installation of electrical wiring. There are two vertical and three horizontal channels running through SMARTWALL. These channels can also be used to install audio and video cables.
SMARTWALL has been certified for Electrical Safety to CSA Standard C22.2 No. 203.
TAPELESS JOINT TECHNOLOGY
Each SMARTWALL panel incorporates a patented “micro bevel” edge detail, which eliminates the traditional taping stage of finishing the drywall surface. The micro bevel also means that 75% less compound will be used, compared to traditional finishing methods. This results in far less sanding and therefore less dust created. SMARTWALL has been designed to work only with a specially formulated low-dust compound called DRIcore PATCH PRO®. The combination of the SMARTWALL tapeless joint technology and PATCH PRO is what enables the joints to be tapeless.
SMARTWALL has been tested to the fullest lengths possible, and is backed by the industry’s highest standards of approval. SMARTWALL meets the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada and the International Residential Code (IRC) in the United States.
